Artistic + Administrative Team

Fiona Blackburn, Artistic Director

Fiona Blackburn’s eclectic musical career has included: performing as a classically trained soloist and recording artist; teaching voice; adjudicating festivals and leading workshops. From the University of British Columbia, Fiona has earned: a Bachelor of Music in voice performance; a Bachelor of Education in secondary music; and a Master of Music in choral conducting.

Professionally, Fiona has performed with the Vancouver Chamber Choir, Vancouver Opera, and numerous Canadian orchestras. Fiona’s solo work has been heard on Canada’s national radio broadcaster, the CBC. Her two Celtic CDs have garnered international airplay, and she even sang for five summers on an Alaskan cruise ship.

As an educator, Fiona has taught classroom music and led school choirs from kindergarten to grade twelve; she has directed community choirs of every age and level of experience: from children’s choirs to a women’s ensemble; semi-professional adult choir to seniors’ groups. Fiona has also been an adjunct professor in the Department of Education at UBC. For outstanding service to our province's choral community, Fiona received the BC Choral Federation's 2016 Willan Award.

Fiona is in demand as a workshop leader, vocal & choral clinician and adjudicator. Last April in Kelowna, Fiona led hundreds of seniors in the BC Choral Federation's biennial Seniors' Chorfest. In early 2020, Fiona will adjudicate the Toronto Kiwanis Choral Festival, one of the largest festivals in Canada.

Fiona is the Founding Director of BC Girls Choir and has been the Artistic Director since its inception. Over of years, she has taken the singers to four continents and has raised the choir's presense to global standards. Fiona is excited to lead the next generation of girls towards achieving excellence – both on and off the stage.

Sandra Meister, Co-Director

For more than three decades, Sandra Meister has been a leader in music education in British Columbia.

During her twenty years as director of Die Meistersinger Children’s Choir, Sandra and the choristers served as musical ambassadors at festivals and conferences in North America and Europe. A highlight of the Meistersinger years was singing for Her Majesty, Queen Elizabeth II in honour of the opening of the University of Northern British Columbia.

Sandra’s work has been acknowledged with many awards including the Governor General’s Medal for outstanding service to arts and culture in Canada, the British Columbia Music Educators Association Professional Educator Award, and the British Columbia Choral Federation's Willan Award.

Sandra has enjoyed providing choral leadership in many communities in North America and abroad (Germany, Austria, Finland, Sweden, Denmark and China) as a guest conductor, facilitator, and adjudicator.

Sandra has served as music teacher, district curriculum co-ordinator and principal in fourteen schools in three school districts. In June of 2018, Sandra retired from being a School Principal in Coquitlam and is now devoting her life to doing what she loves most – sharing the choral art.
